Vellary or Yellow Cucumber is also known as Indian Yellow Cucumber or kathirika. Native to India, It is a widely-cultivated creeping vine plant in the Cucurbitaceae gourd family that bears usually cylindrical fruits, which are used as vegetables. Considered as an annual plant, there are three main varieties of cucumber in India.

1. Kani Vellary or Oriental Pickling Melon.

The golden fruit of this cucumber is also known as the Oriental Pickling Melon, In South India, this melon is connected to their traditional beliefs.

2. Salad Vellary or Salad Cucumber.

Salad cucumber is another well know a variety of cucumber this kind of cucumber is mainly used in vegetable salads  

3. Dosakai Vellary or Dosakai Cucumber 

Dosaki is another variety found in India. The fruit is round and yellow. It is commonly used in south Indian cuisines especially in sambar.
